Slow Food culinary tour to the Lesachtal Valley

With Ö1 to the roots of good taste

The Lesachtal Valley, together with the Gailtal Valley and Lake Weissensee, is home of one of the most pristine natural and hiking landscapes in the Alps. This exploration tour of the tranquil mountain villages takes you to the kitchens and farms of the world's first Slow Food Travel region.

Savour the delicious flavours of the summer harvest!

About the programme

Welcome to the Lesachtal Valley!

Individual arrival (by 5pm). Alpenhotel Wanderniki in Obergail is situated in a first-row location with an unobstructed view of the mountains of the Carnic Alps. After an introduction to the ‘Slow Food Travel’ concept, dinner at the hotel provides the first moments of culinary delights. As a passionate and virtuoso musician, host Nikolaus Lanner is always happy to entertain his guests, playing the flugelhorn or the Styrian harmonica.

Grain and herbs

Visit selected organic farms on foot and gain an insight into the joys and labours of mountain farming. The grain for the original Lesachtal bread grows on the steep, sunny mountain slopes. The bread is listed as UNESCO World Heritage, and one of the flagship products of the Slow Food movement. Sampling it will convince you. During the two-hour mountain village hike, you will also stop at Kathrin Unterweger's Jörgishof farm. The delicious organic cheese from the mountain dairy melts in your mouth! The young farmer prepares the cheese fresh every day from the raw milk of the farm's own cattle. A workshop organised by herbalist and forest educator Klara Obernosterer focuses on the possible uses of Alpine garden, medicinal and wild plants. In the evening, you can look forward to traditional Lesach cuisine at Berggasthof Lahnerhof!

Bread and alpine sounds

The valley’s best farmhouse bread baker, Rosa Lanner, reveals the secret of the popular rye bread in the mountain village of Obergail. The musical Wanderniki then leads to the Obergailer Alm at the foot of the Carnic Alps. The reward for the approximately two-hour hike is an ‘Original Lesachtaler Morende’, a traditional mountain snack with exclusively home-made food from the region.

Wanderniki's flugelhorn can be heard far across the border mountains to Italy. Time to head out again in the evening: a delicious Lesachtal dinner awaits you in the romantic ambience of Almwellness Resort Tuffbad on the southern side of the Lienz Dolomites and Gailtal Alps.

Healing landscape and journey home

Andrea Unterguggenberger has been breeding Carinthian spectacled sheep at the Peintnerhof farm in Niedergail for many years. For just as long and just as intensively, she has been focussing on healthy nutrition according to the ‘Slow Food’ principles. She bakes and smokes food on the farm, grows vegetables in her own garden, and wild herbs are found on the surrounding mountain pastures and meadows. Together with the physician and author Georg Lexer, the dedicated farmer and mountain hiking guide shares her knowledge of the ‘healing’ landscape’s treasures with you. Using regional and seasonal ingredients, everyone gets to help prepare the lunch menu. The next day begins with a cosy breakfast, after which you start your journey home.
