Cross-border hiking marathon

Starting from the mountaineering village of Mauthen, historical paths lead to the Italian border. In the east, we ascend via the Nölblinger Grabensteig to the Zollnersee Hütte, cross over the Kronhof Törl to the Lago di Pramosio and walk along the Traversata carnia to the Freikofelsattel, where we descend back into the Austrian Angebachtal. Passing the Plöckenhaus, we reach the Untere Valentinalm and finally return to Mauthen via the Römerweg. Every year on the last weekend in August, this hike takes place as a competition. Whoever makes it is crowned "Grenzgänger"! More at www.oeav-obergailtal.at

Wskazówki

Through the Nölbling Graben to the Zollnersee Hütte. Continue along the Karnischer Höhenweg 403 to the Obere Bischof Alm and further west to the Kronhof Törl (look out for the signpost). We hike further up to Lago avostanis and keep to the right via serpentines up to the Promoser Törl. From there descend to the Tischlwanger Törl and along the traversata carnica down to the Casera Palgrande (1809 m) and once again down to the Casera Palgrande di sotto (approx. 1540 m). Continue in a westerly direction past the southern slopes of the Gr. Pal and Freikofel up to the Freikofel saddle (1662 m). From there, descend into the Angerbach valley to the Plöckenhaus and via the Theresienhöhe to the Untere Valentin Alm. Now descend to Plöckenstraße and past the Kreuztratte heroes' cemetery along the Roman path back to the starting point in Mauthen.
