The municipality of Hermagor is located in the lower Gailtal valley at the confluence of the Gitschtal and Gailtal valleys near the border with Italy. The municipality is bordered by the Carnic Alps to the south and the Gailtal Alps to the north. Lake Pressegger See, the ninth largest lake in Carinthia, is located in the municipality. In recent years, Hermagor has developed into an important two-seasonal tourist community. In winter, the Nassfeld ski arena, one of the largest ski resorts in the southern Alps, attracts many tourists, while in the summer months there is a wide range of vacation options with water (Pressegger See, Gail), hiking, cycling, mountaineering, geotrails, fishing, culinary festivals and various children's attractions. Hermagor is the economic center of the Gail, Gitsch and Lesach valleys. Crafts and trade settled here at the intersection of two valleys early on. In recent decades, Hermagor has transformed itself from a rather agrarian economy to a strong tourist region.
