Cross-border leisure cycling/biking
In the largest biking region of the Southern Alps, leisure cyclists can enjoy cross-border biking on Austrian and Italian terrain. In summer, the region offers guided bike tours on the Ciclovia Alpe Adria cycle track to Venzone every Friday. In addition to the diverse range of biking options on Carinthia's No. 1 adventure mountain - Nassfeld, families & leisure cyclists also enjoy the unique landscape along the Gailtal Valley Cycle Track R3, which is around 90 km long and runs from Kötschach-Mauthen to Villach. Regional bike and leisure buses, theS4 railway service of the ÖBB (Austrian Railways), with the Gailtalsprinter, and Nassfeld's summer mountain railways provide energy-preserving transport there and back.
Cross-border leisure cycling from Kötschach-Mauthen to Venzone (ITA)
Every Friday at 8:30 am, the bike bus departs from the train station in Hermagor (7:43 am from Kötschach-Mauthen) to the old border crossing in Thörl-Maglern, from where the bike experience accompanied by bike guide starts. The destination is Venzone, today also known as the Lavender Town, in Italy, which is approx. 60 km away. This section is considered to be one of the most attractive of the cycle track.
Because from Tarvisio you cycle a large part on the abandoned railway line "Pontebbana" through the Italian Canal Valley - including tunnels, viaducts and bridges with spectacular views. As the track leads mostly slightly downhill, the route can be managed by everyone. Once you have arrived in the medieval town of Venzone, there is still enough time to enjoy some Italian delicacies or to visit the romantic town square with its town wall, before the comfortable bus shuttle takes you back to Hermagor at 4 pm.
Registration required by 4pm the day before at the Nassfeld-Pressegger See Info & Service Centre by calling +43 (0)4282/2043 or emailing info@nassfeld.at or via the online form!
Costs: Adults € 39.00 / Children € 29.00 (children under the age of 6 free)
The organised tour, incl. bike bus, is free for holders of the +CARD holiday!
