Hermagor - Möderndorf St. Urbani Church

High above the rock face of the Garnitzenklamm gorge stands the little Gothic church of St Urbani, which can be reached through the forest. The ascent or descent can also be made through the Garnitzenklamm gorge.
Suggestion
A visit to the Gailtaler Heimatmuseum in Möderndorf is highly recommended.
Equipment
Normal hiking equipment.
Directions
From Villach:
From the A2 south motorway, take the Hermagor exit and continue on the B111 to Hermagor. At the entrance to Hermagor, approx. 400 metres after the OMV petrol station, you will find the train station on the left-hand side, where parking spaces are also available.

Directions

The hike begins either in Hermagor or in Möderndorf, following the signposts to the Garnitzenklamm gorge. South of the village of Möderndorf, turn right (signposts), heading east past a single property and a crossroads at the edge of the forest. Follow the gravel path for about 10 minutes to the "Urbanikirche" junction and then follow the forest path to another crossroads. From there, keep left to the church at 875 m above sea level, ascent from Hermagor approx. 1 ½ hours, from Möderndorf a good 1 hour. The Gothic church dates back to the early 16th century and is located on a rock that rises vertically from the Garnitzenklamm gorge.

The descent is the same as the ascent.

Other option:
It is also possible to reach the church from the end of the 2nd part of the Garnitzenklamm gorge via the so-called Steinwenderweg trail no. 487 - a popular circular route. See description in the gorge brochure.
