Rossalm (1700 m) - Madritsche (1909 m)

The hike takes us right into the heart of Carinthia's largest ski area and we hike through alpine meadows and ski slopes to the Rossalm and then on to the Madritsche, the ski centre of the Nassfeld.
Suggestion
A show dairy can be visited on the Tressdorfer Alm.
Equipment
Good hiking boots are recommended.
Directions
From the A2 south motorway, take the Hermagor exit and continue on the B111 to Hermagor. At the roundabout take the 2nd exit and cross Hermagor in the direction of Kötschach Mauthen. Follow the main road to Tröpolach, turn right at the bridge and drive to Tröpolach and cross it in the direction of Nassfeld. Drive onto the Nassfeld and park at the border crossing or at the Sonnenalpe Nassfeld.

Directions

From the Sonnenalpe Nassfeld past the hotels heading west, through a tunnel and on the tarmac road to the Tressdorfer Alm, approx. 40 min. From there follow the path or gravel path no. 125 southwards, past the rock labyrinth with various leisure facilities or the summer toboggan run to the signpost "Rossalm". Now there are 2 options:

Option A: to the Rossalm and on to the border crossing: We follow a romantic path between the ski slopes to the idyllically situated Rossalm, which is open in summer. From there, continue south on trail 403, across pistes and past a reservoir to the Nassfeld Pass, total walking time 2 ½ to 3 hours. Return along the main road.

or

Option B: to Madritsche, 1909 m, and from there down to the border crossing:

We do not walk to the Rossalm, but stay on the gravel path, which offers wonderful views of the Julian Alps. In a good 35 minutes we reach the Tressdorfer Höhe, which is characterised by lift and cable car mountain stations. Wonderful views as far as the Tauern and the Trogkofel opposite to the west. A slight ascent to the summit of the Madritsche, where there is an adventure playground with lots of water. We follow the signposts along the border to Nassfeld and descend on path 403 to the Nassfeld Pass, partly using the same path as in variant 1. Total walking time around 3 - 4 hours. Return to the starting point along the main road.
