Ponds & streams: Gail
The Gail river is a habitat for endangered animals and rare plants as well as a recreation area for water and action lovers. Originating on the East Tyrolean side of the Lesachtal valley, the river winds its way through the Carinthian Lesachtal and Gailtal valleys all the way to Villach, where it flows into the Drava. Thanks to the unspoilt wildlife, the shores of the Gail river are particularly popular with nature lovers. However, the Gail is also perfect for fans of water sports, as it offers great opportunities for rafting or canyoning.
The following river sections are suitable for water sports:

upper section: Bichl–St. Lorenzen, 10 km

intermediate section: St. Lorenzen–Birnbaum/Nostra, 10 km

lower section: Birnbaum/Nostra–Wehr before Kötschach-Mauthen, 10 km
You’re riding your bike downstream? Then you’ll not only pass by dense woods but also many of the Gail river’s best swimming spots. Whether it’s after cruising along the Radweg R3 cycle route or after an adrenaline-fuelled downhill ride: There’s simply nothing better than to take a dip in the river on a hot day!
